John Murdoch, 44, from Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, was travelling west on the A71 Allanton to Newmains road when his Mercedes appeared to lose control and leave the carriageway before striking a tree. He died at the scene.
The accident happened at about 9:40am near the junction at Bonkle.
