Dounreay decommissioner wins award

THE company decommissioning the Dounreay nuclear plant has been given a safety award – after it was delayed because of a radioactive leak at the facility.

The British Safety Council was poised to announce last month that Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DRSL) had been awarded a Globe of Honour for environmental management. But the firm was removed from the annual awards announcement after a treatment plant destroying liquid coolant in the Dounreay Fast Reactor was closed on 8 October when drips of caustic liquor from pipework in a shielded cell were detected.

About a litre of fluid leaked out through pinhole breaches of pipe. DSRL said there was no release of radioactivity to the environment and workers were not in danger. The firm has now received confirmation it will receive the award from the British Safety Council which audited the systems in place at Dounreay to protect the environment during decommissioning.
