Donors' £1m gift to uni's new campus

Nearly £1 million has been donated by leading business figures to Edinburgh Napier University's new Sighthill campus, which is due to open later this year.

The redeveloped campus will become the new home of the Faculty of Health, Life and Social Sciences and will include a five-storey library, a state-of-the-art sports facility and 25 specialised teaching rooms.

Staff are set to move in from October 2010 onwards and students will begin studying at the campus from January 2011.

Donations towards the project include money for new nursing scholarships from Roger and Jean Miller, who have also made a significant donation toward a new lecture theatre at Sighthill.

A substantial donation toward the building's infrastructure by former Ethicon Ltd managing director, Dr Lindsay Stewart, was also awarded. Dr Stewart previously supported the creation of the Business School at Craiglockhart, where the iconic egg lecture theatre is named after him.

The Barr Charitable Trust has pledged a sizeable sum towards Sighthill's new Environmental Chamber.
