Constable Michael Fleck, of the robbery unit at Gorbals police office, said: "The man had been out walking his dog when the youths stopped him asking for a small sum of money.

"He was prepared to help them out and this is what they did in return.

"It was a brutal assault and he will be scarred for some time. I would ask that anyone who saw this group of youths, or who has any information that will help us with our inquiries, contact Gorbals police office."

The dog walker was taken by ambulance to the Southern General Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. He has since been discharged.

The four youths, who police said took a small amount of money from the victim, are described as white teenagers wearing tracksuit trousers. One, who was about 14, was wearing an orange tracksuit top and bottoms.

Another of the group, who was 18 and around 6ft, had a medium build and short, dark hair. He was wearing a dark-hooded tracksuit top and bottoms at the time of the attack.
