Dog voted in as mayor of Minnesota town

A DOG has been voted in as mayor of a small town in America, after a landslide election victory.

Duke, a seven-year-old Pyrenean Mountain Dog (or Great Pyrenees) was elected mayor of the small Minnesota town of Cormorant - but it’s unclear what his manifesto was.

He saw off competition from several human candidates, including local shop owner Richard Sherbrook, who reportedly polled fewer than half the votes of his canine opponent.

Cormorant resident Tricia Maloney told WDAY6: “Poor Richard Sherbrook that owns the Cormorant Store, he didn’t even have half as many votes as Duke did.”

According to local news reports, there are 12 people currently resident in Cormorant, who each paid a dollar to vote in the mayoral election.

Duke - who Cormorant residents say enjoys eating burgers and chips and visiting the local pub - will be paid his salary in food.

Cormorant lies around 200 miles north west of Minneapolis, and recently held the election to decide on the honorary mayor for the next 12 months.
