Dog to the rescue after attack on owner

A PET dog raised the alarm when its owner was attacked.

After the 40-year-old man was seriously assaulted in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, his black labrador ran home and alerted the victim's wife. She went out looking for him and found him lying unconscious.

He was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, where his condition was "very serious".

Police are treating the attack, which happened between 9:15 and 9:35pm on Wednesday, as attempted murder.

Detective Constable Stephen Ferry said: "From the extent of the victim's injuries, it is quite clear he has sustained a vicious and prolonged attack."
