Dog dies after blaze rips through family’s home

TWENTY firefighters tackled a blaze at a house in Gilmerton, in which a dog died.

The family were out when fire broke out at the detached, two-storey stone property in Drum Street.

Firefighters were called just after 10pm last night and arrived to find smoke billowing from the roof and the fire starting to break through into the roof space.

Fire crews from Liberton, Dalkeith and Newcraighall were involved in tackling the blaze, along with support from Newcraighall and Marionville.

The house was badly damaged and investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said it had taken some time to deal with the blaze.

She said: “No-one was in the house. The family were out at the time. Fire crews removed a dog from the property, but unfortunately it died from smoke inhalation.”
