Doctors given guidance on dealing with rape victims

DOCTORS across the Lothians are being given advice on how to better deal with the victims of rape and sexual abuse.

A guidance pack is being circulated to GPs in the area because health chiefs think they come into contact with victims more often than they realise.

Initial results suggest the move has been positive and it is understood other health boards may copy the initiative.

As part of the instructions, doctors are encouraged to urge relevant patients to contact necessary voluntary services.

Lesley Johnston, NHS Lothian's adviser on gender-based violence, said: "Evidence showed that survivors of rape and sexual abuse often disclose details of past and current abuse to their GPs.

"This resource provides guidance to GPs and covers helpful reactions to hearing about abuse, as well as factual information.

"It includes practical advice for patients on the possible physical and emotional effects, as well as how to access further local specialist services."
