Developers vie to build new homes

THE city council has invited developers to submit bids to build homes as part of a major new housing project.

The 21st Century Homes scheme will bring thousands of affordable homes to Edinburgh and regenerate areas such a Muirhouse and Craigmillar.

This week the contract to build 35 new homes at West Pilton Crescent in Muirhouse was advertised with a budget of £3.5 million, while a £5.5m contract will be offered for Greendykes.

Altogether hundreds of homes will be developed in each of these areas. Work is expected to begin in late summer or early autumn this year.

In November the Evening News reported that a master- plan for around 470 properties in Pennywell and Muirhouse has been completed in consultation with residents.

Many of those living in the area have moved elsewhere while ageing tower blocks are demolished and the project will include new houses, flats and parks to attract families to the area again.

As part of the project the three iconic tower blocks in Sighthill were demolished in August to make way for new family homes.
