Detectives launch murder investigation into pub landlord's death

POLICE today launched a murder inquiry over the death of a pub landlord in East Lothian.

The body of Stevie Curran (pictured), 47, from Musselburgh, was found at around 2am yesterday behind the Dolphin Inn in Whitecraig.

Police said a car crash which took place earlier on the A1 is being linked to the death.

A Toyota Celica travelling south collided with the central reservation near Dunbar and was found abandoned when officers arrived at the scene.

Detectives appealed for anyone who was in the pub around closing time or any witnesses on the A1 who saw the vehicle driving erratically at the Thistly Cross roundabout or the Spott to contact them.

Officers also asked anyone who saw a man walking alone in the countryside near the Broxburn Estate in Dunbar to contact Lothian and Borders Police.

Detective Inspector Stuart Hood, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are still trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding both of these incidents. However, we are confident they are linked.

"If you were in the Dolphin Inn around closing time, we are very keen to speak to you and would urge you to come forward and assist us at this time.

"Likewise, we are also keen to hear from anyone who saw the Toyota Celica on or around the A1 and who has information as to its movements before the collision.

"Anyone with information that can assist with our investigation is asked to contact police immediately."
