Derek Riordan fined over Edinburgh pub assault

FORMER Hibernian striker Derek Riordan has been fined over £400 for assaulting a man in a pub in Edinburgh last year.

Riordan, 31, pleaded guilty at the Justice of the Peace Court to assaulting Damian Holahan on the head to his injury at Malone’s Irish Bar in Forrest Road in February last year.

His solicitor, Kathleen More, told Justice Julia Toch that her client was a footballer, and a ‘man of great talent on the football field’.

She confirmed that he was out of contract but would be able to pay a financial penalty.

Riordan had been enjoying a night out with his brother, and had consumed alcohol.

Miss More added: “His recollection of the events is a bit vague,” adding that Riordan and Mr Holahan had bumped into each other on the dance floor.

“Mr Riordan misjudged the situation and struck the complainer on the face. He regrets it very much,” she said.

Justice Toch fined Riordan £430, reduced from £480 as a result of his guilty plea. He has until 10 July to pay the full amount.

Riordan, who had spells with Hibernian, Celtic and Chinese side Shaanxi Chanba has recently been released by Alloa after a brief spell.
