Demolition on cards for iconic city hall

ONE of Scotland's iconic public buildings could be razed to the ground to create a new civic square.

The fate of Perth's B-listed City Hall has been in limbo since August last year when Perth and Kinross Council terminated its contract with developers, Wharfside Regeneration, a London-based company which had been planning to turn the venue into a shopping centre.

But a report by consultants, Locum Consulting and Colliers International, to go before a special meeting of the council next week, states that the full demolition of the City Hall and the use of the site to create a new Civic Square for Perth, is the "clear winner" of an appraisal exercise on the future of the building.

The consultants state: "Examples from elsewhere suggest that a new public space embodying best practice in design, management and animation could make a significant contribution towards the revitalisation of the city centre and the council's wider social, economic and environmental objectives."
