Dedication panel on the old cottage

Dave from Colinton has this query: “When the Dreghorn barracks were refurbished a cottage was demolished that stood next to Redford Road. On the wall of the cottage was a dedication to Chinese Gordon. What was the dedication and what happened to panel?”

• Kathleen Anderson, from Ratho, replies: “The dedication I can’t recall, but the plaque refers to Major General Charles George Gordon (1839-1885), a distinguished soldier who served in Crimea, China and India. Whilst holding Khartoum he was captured and killed.

“My uncle and aunt, Robert and Florence, lived there [Dreghorn] for many years. Their son, my cousin Jimmy, tells me the plaque went to Redford Barracks before the cottage was demolished.
