Death driver 'may not know they hit officer'

A SCENES of crime officer who died while crossing one of Scotland's busiest roads may have been killed by a driver who was "completely unaware" of the collision, police revealed.

Neil Smith, 32, was killed on the eastbound carriageway of the A90 between Perth and Dundee near the Kinfauns flyover at about 4:30am on Saturday.

Mr Smith, a scenes of crime officer with the Scottish Police Services Authority in Dundee, is believed to have been heading to a friend's house in the area after a night out in Perth when he was struck by a passing vehicle. His body was found on the carriageway by a lorry driver.

Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, the officer in charge of the inquiry into Mr Smith's death, said: "It's possible that the driver of the vehicle responsible is completely unaware that they have hit someone."
