Darren Day’s driving licence returned after ban

SINGER Darren Day has had his driving licence returned after being banned for crashing his car in the Capital while drunk.

The 44-year old was banned from driving for five years in April, 2010, after crashing his Mercedes into a lamppost in Manor Place, Edinburgh, on December 18, 2009.

Day, who was appearing in the musical We Will Rock You at the Playhouse Theatre, pled guilty at the city’s Sheriff Court on January 20, 2010, to driving with 58 milligrams of alcohol in his breath when the limit is 35.

Day represented himself in court yesterday before Sheriff William Holligan to apply for the restoration of his licence. The Sheriff pointed out to the actor that he had two convictions for drink driving within a ten-year period and the law was, that in this situation, a licence could not be restored until three years had passed.

Day declared that when he tendered the guilty plea in January 2010, an interim disqualification had been imposed. “That was the day the licence was taken off me,” he said.

The Sheriff said he was “inclined to grant the application”, but it would only come into effect on April 8 this year.
