Darkness beats searchers as Polish angler goes missing

A SEA and air search for a missing angler was due to be resumed today.

The alarm was raised after the fisherman was reported missing at around 1pm yesterday.

He had been seen casting his fishing rod from rocks near Cove in Aberdeen.

However, the family of the missing Polish man – thought to be in his late 20s or early 30s – raised the alarm after he failed to return home from his expedition.

Aberdeen Coastguard and lifeboat teams were launched and an RAF helicopter was scrambled to assist in yesterday afternoon's search.

However, the operation was called off without success as darkness fell.

A spokesman for Grampian Police said that officers were continuing to carry out checks with his friends in the Aberdeen area in case the man could be traced through them.

A spokesman from the Aberdeen Coastguard said they had carried out an extensive search of the area.

"Reports suggested the man was seen angling off rocks off the coast of Aberdeen."

He added: "A very thorough search was carried out involving police, ourselves and a helicopter but we failed to locate the missing man."

A spokesman for Grampian Police said: "Once darkness fell we had to call off the search last night.

"Officers will, however, carry on making enquiries overnight and depending on developments, the search is expected to resume at first light."
