Cyclists urged to get family and friends on their bikes

Cyclists in the Capital are being encouraged to get their friends and families on their bikes in a bid to reduce emissions, cut congestion and boost health and fitness.

There are prizes on offer for those who take part in the three-week Cycle Challenge, which starts on August 2.

The initiative follows a similar exercise earlier this year when more than 2000 people joined in.

The challenge is part of A Better Way to Work, a project by the Bike Station in Causewayside, which aims to encourage people to leave the car at home and use more sustainable means of transport.

Challenge co-ordinator Esther Halcrow said: "The plan is simple - as well as getting more people registered for the challenge, we're asking the people we already have cycling to encourage their friends and family to get involved.

"We're looking to encourage at least 400 people who haven't been on a bike in the last year to try cycling. It's a great form of exercise."
