Cyclist police officer dies in road accident

TRIBUTES have been paid to a police officer who was killed following a road accident in Eaglesham, near Glasgow.

Neil McCover, 55, a keen cyclist, was fatally injured after his bicycle and a Mazda car were in collision on the B764 on Friday afternoon. He died at the scene. Relatives are aware.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Superintendent McCover, who was based at the nearby Strathclyde Police Training and Recruitment Centre in Jackton, lived in Kirkintilloch and is survived by his wife Margaret and 22-year-old daughter Lauren.

Strathclyde's Chief Constable Stephen House said yesterday: "Neil was a popular, valued and highly respected officer, and his death is a shock to everyone who knew him.

"He was a nice, genuine man and will be sadly missed by us all.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time."
