Cycle lanes in the pipeline for Leith Walk

SEGREGATED bicycle lanes are being considered for Leith Walk as part of plans going before city councillors.

A report for the city’s transport and environment committee said an uphill cycle-only lane from Annandale Street to Picardy Place was being considered.

Cyclist crossings at London Road and another specialist cycle lane from London Road to Picardy Place are also being discussed this week. The council will seek funds from sustainable transport charity Sustrans and Transport Scotland to help finance the improvements.

Planners intend to leave space around any segregated cycle ways for a potential future tram line on Leith Walk.

Leith councillor Chas Booth said: “I’m delighted the council has listened to local opinion and to the Greens who have long argued for high-quality cycle routes on Leith Walk.”
