Cultural centre to get £300,000 upgrade

WORK has begun on a £300,000-plus refurbishment of a cultural centre for Edinburgh's Hindu community.

The upgrade of the B-listed Hindu Mandir Cultural Centre on St Andrew Place in Leith is expected to take nine months to complete.

The refurbishment work will include roof and stonework repairs, improvements to the entrance, a new lift, new heating and a general redecoration of the whole building.

The total project cost of 322,610 is being funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, Leith Townscape Heritage Initiative and the Hindu Mandir community.

The building is a former church and is now used to promote religion, culture and the arts.
