BFI curator Vic Pratt said the film - which tells the story of a sex-obsessed teenager trying to join the permissive society - is a "classic coming-of-age story".

He said: "The timing of it is sad, but hopefully this is going to possibly inspire renewed interest in Clive Donner's work.

"He was one of those directors who spanned a wide part of British film-making. He worked with David Lean on Oliver Twist and went through the Rank organisation."

The film, which features music by Traffic and the Spencer Davies Group, was based on a novel by journalist Hunter Davies.
