Crockart backing for Trident decision delay

The decision to delay the replacement of Trident has been backed by Edinburgh West MP Mike Crockart.

Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday, the Prime Minister confirmed that the critical "main gate" spending decision on the replacement of the UK's independent nuclear deterrent will be deferred until 2015.

Mr Crockart, a long-standing opponent of plans for the like-for-like replacement of Trident, says this move will save hundreds of millions of pounds.

"I have always held the opinion that committing to a full scale replacement of our independent nuclear deterrent before we had to makes no sense," he said.

"The Liberal Democrats opposed the replacement of Trident on a like-for-like basis and we will continue to make the case for alternatives."
