Crimewatch appeal over Jean Campbell murder

Jean Campbell, 53, was last seen heading towards the city’s Cranhill Park while walking her dog near her home in the east end on Friday 13 December.

Her body was discovered at around 7:40am the next day by her husband who went to look for her after returning from his night shift to realise Jean was not home.

The murder inquiry has seen police take more than 1,500 DNA samples from both men and women in the area.

Now, the detective leading the investigation will appear on Crimewatch to appeal to the public to help find her killer.

The case will feature on the programme being broadcast tonight.

Police ‘believe someone knows who is responsible’

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Carey said: “Jean was a wife, mother and grandmother and her family are devastated at her death, particularly in these tragic circumstances.

“Our inquiries have been intense and thorough, with a dedicated team of experienced detectives working around the clock on the inquiry, however the person responsible for her murder and the reason why it happened have still to be established.

“Over 1,500 DNA samples have been taken from people, both men and women, in the area with hundreds of homes visited when conducting the house-to-house inquiries.

“We believe that the local community holds the key to solving this inquiry and I would again appeal to anyone with information to come forward to police.”

He added: “I really do believe that there is someone out there who is either harbouring the person responsible or knows who is responsible but has not been in contact with police. This can, of course, be for a number of reasons; fear or intimidation being the most obvious.

“However, I would stress that if you have information but do not wish to approach the police directly, then please call Crimestoppers, who are offering a reward of up to £5,000.

“You do not have to give any personal details. We also have a dedicated email address that you can contact without saying who you are.”

Mrs Campbell was captured on CCTV at around 10.30pm on December 13 in the Bellrock Street area, heading towards the park. She was wearing pyjama bottoms and a black, three-quarter length jacket with a hood.

Her German shepherd dog was found in the park.
