Crews tackle blaze at uni

firefighters were called to a fire at an Edinburgh University building yesterday.

The fire broke out behind an external door at the Institute for Academic Development in Bristo Square just before 11am. The building was evacuated but nobody was injured.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: "Some workmen using a blowtorch accidentally set fire to the frame of the door. Firefighters used an axe to gain entry to the building."

An elderly man also received oxygen from fire crews after a kitchen fire in a property in Pennywell Gardens just after 5pm yesterday.

The 67-year-old was checked over at the scene by paramedics.
