Craigmillar revamp gets new heating

THE city council is to build a new heating system to serve the expansion of the Craigmillar area.

Council chiefs have applied to create a single-storey building at Greendykes Road that will provide a secure enclosure for the new district heating system.

The site, which is designated as open space, used to be a playground close to the Wauchope House and Greendykes Road tower blocks, the local community centre and Greengables Nursery School.

The new district heating system will initially service the two tower blocks but will be designed to have capacity to service future local housing in the area.

City planners have said that the existing site is of "limited amenity value" because of the quality of the land, and insisted that the loss of open space will not have a significant impact on the character of the local environment or local amenity. Councillors were due to make a decision today.
