Crackdown on phone drivers

THE driver of an articulated lorry was caught using a handheld mobile phone behind the wheel of his vehicle by police.

The 59-year-old man, from Bonnyrigg, was driving along the A7 at Hardengreen, Midlothian, at about 3pm last Wednesday.

Officers spotted him using the phone and pulled him over at the roadside. A report is being submitted to the procurator fiscal.

On Friday, officers caught a 41-year-old man from Galashiels using a phone while driving a BMW in Newtongrange. The man was issued with a fixed penalty ticket.

Police are cracking down on using handheld mobile phones as part of a road safety campaign.
