Crackdown on drivers using phones

POLICE were today set to carry out a one-day crackdown on drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel.

The 24-hour Mobile Phone Day of Action is being co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland in a bid to help reduce casualties on our roads.

Increased patrols will be conducted across the force area using both marked and unmarked police vehicles.

Chief Superintendent Charlie Common, from Lothian and Borders Police, said: "As recently as February this year, during a similar campaign, I was disappointed to learn that despite all of our publicity, a significant number of drivers had been detected that day using a mobile phone."
