Councillor questions roads record

THE Capital's clogged roads are among the most congested in Europe, according to a new survey.

Edinburgh came seventh in a list of the continent's most gridlocked cities and second only to London as the UK's worst.

According to the research carried out by sat nav firm TomTom, more than 30 per cent of roads in Edinburgh are regularly congested. The figure for Brussels - the worst in Europe, according to the survey, was 38.9 per cent and the figure for London was 34.5 per cent.

Councillor Gordon Mackenzie, Edinburgh's transport convener, said: "While it's encouraging that Edinburgh is presented as this year's most improved city after Dublin, I would again question the reliability of the data, which would seem to be based on a very narrow, and potentially misleading, measure of congestion."
