Council vow to cut emissions

COUNCIL bosses have pledged to halve their carbon emissions in less than ten years.

Edinburgh City Council said the 2020 target was just one of six climate change goals being proposed as part of a wider programme.

The targets, which are unique to Edinburgh, are part of a wider vision for the city, covering ten themes based on the Aalborg Charter - part of the European Sustainable Towns and Cities Campaign.

Council leade Jenny Dawe said: "As Scotland's capital city, we are committed to leading the way on sustainability. Climate change represents one of the biggest challenges we face. Addressing it involves taking immediate action to reduce carbon emissions and longer-term planning to address potential future impacts."

Sue Bruce, chief executive of Edinburgh City Council, said: "We recognise the need to engage with Edinburgh's communities, those views can help shape the way the council makes decisions and influence the way the city develops."
