Copter rescues father and son

A TEENAGER and his father had to be rescued by helicopter after they fell on to a rocky beach.

The 17-year-old is thought to have broken his leg after losing his footing and falling 20 to 30ft down a steep outcrop at Dunure, in Ayrshire, on Sunday. His father went to his aid, but he also slipped and fell.

The Royal Navy's duty crew at HMS Gannet, based at Prestwick, was scrambled to the scene by Clyde Coastguard at about 6pm. The pair were found lying on rocks at the bottom of the slope.

Navigator Lieutenant Alex Stevenson said: "We landed the helicopter on the beach around 200 yards from the casualties.

"The older of the two casualties had sustained only minor injuries and was able to walk, but the younger one had a suspected broken leg and we elected to stretcher him and winch him on to the aircraft."

The pair were taken by helicopter to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.
