Constance concerned at shotgun controls

LIVINGSTON SNP MSP Angela Constance has voiced concern over the lack of controls over shotguns.

She has written a letter to the Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, pointing out that, unlike firearm licences, shotgun certificates set no limit on the number of shotguns or ammunition held, nor is there a minimum age for the grant of a shotgun certificate.

Ms Constance said she was also concerned that while firearms offences fell in Scotland by 17 per cent in 2008-9, offences involving a shotguns increased by 34 per cent. She said: "Following recent high-profile shooting incidents, it is inevitable and appropriate that we cast our eyes over firearms legislation, in particular the rules that apply to shotguns.

"We should, of course, avoid knee-jerk reactions and should debate the issues associated with firearms and shotguns sensibly and sensitively.

"However, we do need to ensure that the law is fit for purpose in so much as it is understandable, enforceable and ensures the safety of Scotland's communities."

Mr MacAskill has agreed to meet her in order to discuss the issue.
