Community News: True-life tale to get launch at bookshop

A book by a Polish woman who spent ten years as a political prisoner in Soviet prison camps will be launched in the Capital on Wednesday.

The Long Bridge by Urszula Muskus is the story of her arrest and deportation to Kazakhstan, ten years' hard labour and four years exile in Siberia, before being reunited with her son and daughter in London.

The launch is at Blackwell's on South Bridge.

Property firm to manage sites for Royal Mail

PROPERTY firm Jones Lang LaSalle has been appointed to manage a series of sites across Scotland owned by Royal Mail Pension Funds.

The sites include several in Edinburgh, including Westfield Sainsbury's and the Waitrose in Morningside. Neil Ritchie of Jones Lang LaSalle, said: "We are delighted to have been given this instruction. The retail sites in Glasgow are home to well-known brands, whilst the Edinburgh locations include Kwik Fit, Waitrose and Sainsbury's."

Camera Obscura sets a record

THE Camera Obscura has achieved record visitor numbers since it unveiled its new attractions earlier this year.

Visitor numbers hit an all-time high in the weeks after July's opening of the World of Illusions, with 1200 visitors through the door in one day.

Summit aims to save lives

A SUMMIT will take place in Edinburgh next month on the latest advances in blood pressure treatment.

The event is being staged at the Western General Hospital, and aims to increase awareness of the issue, and help reduce the risk to people of suffering heart attacks and strokes due to the condition.

Charities and community groups in Edinburgh could soon be in the money as funding organisation the People's Postcode Trust reopens its application process.

The body is inviting charities and community groups to apply for between 500-10,000 at www.postcodelottery.com

Greggs gives some dough to good cause

High street bakery Greggs has donated to a local cause.

The chain's Corstorphine outlet has given 1,000 to Thistle Foundation, which provides support for people with disabilities and health conditions.

The charity was recommended by staff member Margaret Wood, whose brother Bob used the service after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

He said: "She is aware of how Thistle Foundation supported me through a very difficult time."
