Community News: Students who have the write stuff required

THE Capital's largest student newspaper is appealing for budding journalists to come forward to fill a range of available positions.

The Journal, which distributes across the city's universities, is looking to fill a number of vacancies at their Moray House office, including editor-in-chief, features editor, news writers and page designers.

They also need photographers to work on the publication.

Get noticed at big Glow in the Park walk

CHILDREN will be encouraged to don high-visibility clothing for the first ever Glow in the Park sponsored walk.

The event, arranged by Royal Blind, takes place in West Princes Street Gardens on October 30, opening with a light show.

Entry costs 5 and walkers are asked to raise sponsorship for the Royal Blind's appeal to build a residential centre at its school's Craigmillar Park Campus.

Tuck into some tasty flesh this Hallowe'en

CAMPAIGNERS are calling on Hallowe'en revellers to recycle the flesh from their pumpkins rather than throwing it in the bin.

Each year in the UK, around one million pumpkins are sold, with the vast majority hollowed out and carved into Jack-O'-Lanterns for Hallowe'en, but most people simply throw away the flesh once they've scooped it out.

Zero Waste Scotland wants Edinburgh residents to turn the pumpkin flesh into a soup or a lasagne instead of sending it straight to landfill.

Join the nature trail clean-up

THERE will be a nature trail clean-up on October 23 at Craiglockhart Woods.

Gloves, bags and litter pickers will be provided to volunteers, who should meet at the gate by the pond on Lockharton Crescent at 10am.

The event will run until noon.

International agents event

Officials from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Nepal, Pakistan, Nigeria and London descended on Stevenson College for its first International Agents Conference.

The role of the education agent is to promote the college around the world, as well as to help international students with their applications.

Lifting the lid on gulag life

A memoir of life in the Russian gulags is to be launched at Blackwell bookshop on South Bridge on October 27.

The Long Bridge was written by Urszula Muskus, who spent 16 years as a prisoner.

The launch will be chaired by Amnesty International's John Watson.
