Community News: No relish for McDonalds mast-er plan

RESIDENTS have lodged an objection to 40 foot high Golden Arches set to tower over Craigleith.

Burger chain McDonalds has applied for a refit of its branch on Telford Road, including an application to almost triple the size of the pole bearing the trademark golden "M" sign from its current 15 feet.

A spokesman for Craigleith & Blackhall Community Council said: "The height of this proposed mast is totally out of scale with the residential area."

Student's skills garner awards

CITY student Maria Dowling received awards at the UK's biggest construction skills competition.

The Telford College student won WorldSkills UK bronze medal in the painting and decorating category of SkillBuild 2010 and a Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year 2010 medal.

A SERVICE which helps the homeless as well as newly qualified physios has won praise.

NHS Lothian's StreetSmart physio service won an award at a recent ceremony.

It provides experience to new physios in Edinburgh and much-needed healthcare to those without a home.

Budding artist is in the frame

BUDDING city artist Andy Jack has won a competition to have his latest work displayed at The Premier Inn Central.

The sixth year St Thomas of Aquin's pupil's panorama of the Edinburgh skyline won him 150 in shopping vouchers and a display at the hotel's Thyme restaurant.

Ladies given chance to be pampered

A FASHION show and ladies' pamper evening will take place in the Capital tomorrow night.

The fun event has been organised by womenswear boutique CHI Edinburgh in order to raise vital funds for the NSPCC's ChildLine Service in Scotland.

A champagne reception for guests will be held at the Barcel Carlton Hotel on North Bridge at 7pm, with the fashion show itself getting under way at 7.30pm.
