Community News: Mental health service given a cash boost

A CITY centre group for young people with care or mental health problems has secured a funding boost for a range of projects.

Step Up, which is run by young users of the Horizon supported accommodation in the Cowgate, is to be awarded 1659 by the City Centre Neighbourhood Partnership.

The service is run for people with a history of care or mental health problems, and the funding will help provide practical arts and healthy eating courses, equipment and cultural visits.

HUNDREDS of entries from across Scotland have flooded in for the Greyfriars Bobby Children's Painting contest.

Commanding officer of 105 Regiment Colonel Huthwaite will present the winning artist with their prize at Edinburgh Castle on October 4, after entries have been judged by Capital author and illustrator John Fardell.

There are five age categories, ranging from infant to 17-year-olds, within the competition which closed on September 11.

Dummy tram back in old spot

TRAM bosses have re-opened their vehicle on Princes Street to the public following the Pope's visit.

The 2 million tram car, which has been on display for the past few months, was closed and then moved for the arrival of the pontiff last week.

Careers show has diversity

A DIVERSITY careers show will be taking place in the Capital to allow job-seekers to meet employers who champion diversity within their organisations.

The Diversity Career Show, run in partnership with gay, lesbian and bisexual charity Stonewall, will be held at Our Dynamic Earth on November 16.

Free cycles for children

FREE reconditioned bicycles along with helmets and certificates have been given to 21 Wester Hailes youngsters who completed four or more sessions at the Hailes Quarry Park Summer Bike Club. The community scheme aimed to encourage children to get active in their local park.

Law firm trio are guilty of winning race

A TRIO from a Capital law firm have won first prize in a 50 kilometre endurance race beating rivals from across the UK.

The threesome from Burness on Lothian Road claimed top spot in the Buccleuch Property Challenge against 150 fellow professionals after completing the race in four hours and 39 minutes.

A number of feats had to be overcome including cross country running, mountain biking and orienteering.
