Community News: Learn about units of alcohol at health events

A SERIES of education events have taken place across the city to provide information on alcohol units.

Health chiefs are keen to show people exactly how much they drink and the dangers it poses.

NHS Lothian's specialist in public health Jim Sherval said: "We all need to drink less. At the moment too many people are regularly drinking more than sensible levels.

"Most people know that alcohol is measured in units, but who really understands what a unit is and how many people keep a count of the units they drink?"

15,000 will help dreams come true

CITY business exchange Winning Entrepreneurs raised 15,000 for the sick children's charity Dreamz 4 U.

Business figures from across the Lothians put money in the pot at a fundraiser at the Prestonfield Hotel last week.

The money raised will go towards a "bank of dreams", which allows children with a range of illnesses to take part in adventures ranging from meeting pop stars and footballers to being 007 for a day.

Neurological disorder to be discussed

A CONFERENCE to discuss finding a cure for neurological disorder Rett Syndrome is being held at Heriot-Watt University.

The event, at the university's Edinburgh Conference Centre, will bring together scientists and health professionals who are involved in investigating a cure.

The disorder is seen primarily in females and causes developmental disabilities, leaving sufferers completely dependent.

The event runs until tomorrow.

Guests add 1 for children

GUESTS at Hilton hotels in the Capital are being urged to help disadvantaged children by adding an optional 1 to their bill for an annual fundraising campaign.

THE Volunteer Recruitment Fair will take place at the Assembly Rooms on George Street on October 14.

The event, which runs from 11am until 7pm, gives would-be volunteers the chance to meet representatives of more than 100 organisations with opportunities available.

Golf club to hold open weekend

PEOPLE are being invited to an open weekend at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club on October 23 and 24.
