Community News: Idlewild rock guitarist to play at fair

IDLEWILD guitarist Rod Jones is set to perform at a Learning Information Fair at Tynecastle High School on Thursday.

Mr Jones, who recently became musician-in-residence with the South West Sounds Project, is promoting the free fair, which will showcase educational organisations in the area including Careers Scotland, Napier University, Stevenson College, Fountainbridge Library, Wester Hailes Education Centre and WHALE Arts Agency from 10am.

A DENTAL practice in Gorgie is to expand into an empty shop downstairs.

The Gorgie Road Dental Practice, at 296 Gorgie Road, has won approval to expand into number 294 on the ground floor.

The shop has been lying empty for 18 months and had been rented by a financial adviser and lawyer.

Michael breaks sound barrier for competition

AN Edinburgh man is one step closer to winning a national competition for people who are hard of hearing or deaf who have shown outstanding courage or achievement.

Michael Brown reached the finals of Sound Barrier Star Awards competition.

The competition recognised Mr Brown's dedication to the Red Cross and the fact he gives up his time to be a canoeing instructor for a local scout troop.

Traditional folk music set to enliven city close

The Real Mary King's Close will come alive with the sound of traditional Scottish folk for the first time in four centuries next month.

Singer-songwriter Iain Morrison will play a small gig in the historic underground passageways in aid of Oxjam, a month long national music festival with all proceeds going to Oxfam UK.

Stornaway-born Iain, said: "We've never played in such an unusual space so it should make for a great night."

The concert is being held on September 7, and will also feature poet and storyteller Daibhidh Martin.
