Community News: Guide dog helpers raise awareness

GUIDE dog volunteers are set to talk about their experiences at an awareness day in the Capital.

The volunteers have organised an awareness and experience day on Thursday at Festival Square as part of Guide Dog Week 2010.

Volunteer Louise McAusland, from Edinburgh, said: "I wanted to do my bit for Guide Dog Week and hope everyone in the area will support me.

Pupils pass judgement on mock trial

Lord Hamilton, Scotland's most senior judge, opened the doors of the Court of Session to ten and 11-year-olds for a mock trial yesterday afternoon.

The P7 pupils of Oxgangs, Pentland and Colinton primary school were so young, Lord Hamilton had to give special dispensation for them to host mock cases in the supreme civil court of Scotland before some of his fellow judges.

Teaching idea nets top prize

AN online teaching facility devised by Heriot-Watt University has been recognised for improving students' online assessment in Higher maths.

The facility, called SCHOLAR, won the Summative Assessment Award at the Scottish eAssessment Conference 2010.

Get in a lava over volcanos

VISITORS can get a guided tour of Arthur's Seat on Saturday.

The trip around the extinct volcano will be hosted by experts from Glasgow and Edinburgh universities.

THE owners of a popular Newhaven bistro are set to open a new cafe overlooking The Mound.

Porto & Fi deli have been given planning permission to turn part of the former Bank of Scotland on North Bank Street into a bistro called Cairn Cakes.

New-look store opens doors after major refit

Scotmid has reopened its Colinton Mains store in Edinburgh after a major refit.

Over 330,000 has been invested in the store as part of a programme being carried out by the Scotmid Co-operative Society to modernise all its stores across Scotland.

Hollis Smallman, Scotmid Co-operative Society President, was on hand to cut the ribbon and welcome the first customers to the store.

He said: Scotmid is now two-thirds of the way through its programme to modernise all its stores."
