Community News: Clock in for screening of classic movie

A SCREENING of the controversial movie A Clockwork Orange is to be held in the Capital tonight.

The Stanley Kubrick classic, adapted from the best-selling novel by Anthony Burgess, was famously withdrawn by the director in 1973 over fears about copycat violence.

Following the film there will be a discussion on the philosophical and ethical issues raised by the story, led by Dr Tillmann Vierkant, lecturer in the Philosophy of Mind at Edinburgh University.

Music shop on song to boost city's talent

A MUSIC store in the Grassmarket is hoping to boost the opportunities for local performers with a range of new events.

Red Dog Music is aiming to have everything from nightly Red Dog Music Clinics to Hair of the Dog Sundays, featuring in-store gigs with local bands and artists, as well as offering Open Jam Sessions to local artists.

The store has also started producing a free music magazine, The Dog.

Pair on grave vandal charge

Two men, aged 21 and 25, have been arrested and charged in connection with vandalism to an Edinburgh cemetery.

A total of 23 headstones were damaged within the Mount Vernon Cemetery following the incident on September 1.

The men are due to appear in court at a later date.

Singer Adair tops the Bill

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Bill Adair will appear at the Wee Folk Club on September 19.

The musician will perform at the club, downstairs at the Royal Oak Pub in Infirmary Street, from 8.30pm. His repertoire includes everything from Scottish ballads to Mississippi Delta blues and his own compositions.

Ruairidh MacDonald of Greenspace Landscapes and Catriona Perry of Dance Division were the top two in the PSYBT Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards.

Union hosts fundraising sale

THE English-Speaking Union Scotland will hold a fundraising sale at 23 Atholl Crescent at 10.30am on September 18.

Refreshments, books, plants, second-hand clothes and other goods will be on offer. Donations can be dropped at the same address or collected. Call 229 1528.

Blingo event is a real dazzler

Young authors' conference on the write track

AN EVENT to help young writers find out more about making it a career is to be held in the Capital.

The Young Writers' Conference, aimed at 14 to 17-year-olds, will include advice from professional writers and industry insiders, as well as performance and creative writing workshops, and is also a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded writers.

The event is being held at the Scottish Book Trust, Sandeman House, on Saturday, November 13, from 10am to 4pm.
