Community News: Charity seeks fundraisers to join Christmas run

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is looking for volunteers to raise funds for its work by taking part in the Capital's Christmas Walk and Run. The event takes place in Inverleith Park on December 5.

The trust's regional fundraising manager June Ross said: "With your help we can continue our pioneering gene therapy research."

Car dealer gives Sick Kids 4500

THE Sick Kids hospital has received a 4500 donation from car dealership, Peter Vardy Ltd. The money will be used for equipment to help children relax and sleep, to be located in the hospital's Calareidh house, which provides respite care for severely disabled children.

Card for MP by art group

A SENIOR Citizens' Arts and Crafts Group in Craigentinny has designed the Christmas card which Edinburgh East Labour MP Sheila Gilmore will send to constituents, colleagues and local organisations.

As a small thank you, Ms Gilmore donated two boxes of art supplies for the group to use.

Painter's work goes on show

THE work of an Edinburgh-trained artist is part of a prestigious Scottish art exhibition in London.

Painter Paul Kennedy, who attended Edinburgh College of Art, yesterday saw his artwork mounted at the Caledoniart Christmas exhibition at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery.

Ex-homeless poet sells book in charity shop

A POET who spent time on the streets has seen her latest work go on sale in a homeless charity shop.

Nicole Carter's Manana Attitude, which features new poems and short stories, is now on the shelves at Shelter Scotland having previously been sold at the Scottish Poetry Library and city libraries.

Last year, the Evening News told how Ms Carter put her life back on track following years of depression stemming from drug use and association with dealers, one of whom raped her.

MSPs praise carers' group for 'kite mark'

MSPs have congratulated a carers' group on becoming the first charity in Scotland to win a quality assurance "kite mark".

Edinburgh Central's Sarah Boyack tabled a motion at Scottish Parliament praising VOCAL (Voice of Carers Across Lothian) on its success on being awarded the PQASSO Quality Mark Level 2.

The charity also earned the title of Centre of Excellence earlier this month.
