Community News: Blind group campaign to beat bullies

A FORUM of blind and partially-sighted young people in Scotland will launch a national campaign in Edinburgh this Thursday to raise awareness of what being young and living with sight loss is actually like.

They hope the campaign, called Stop and Stare, will help combat the isolation, exclusion and bullying that some forum members have experienced.

The Haggeye forum, set up by RNIB Scotland, will unveil a new digital resource kit for schools at a launch event in the Festival Theatre.

5k postcode victory is right up their street

A CITY team has won 5000 for charity after a triumphant appearance on Postcode Challenge on Friday night.

Cathie and Graham MacDonald, along with Danny and Sandy Forbes, went head-to-head with a family team from Troon, South Ayrshire, but came out on top following a tense battle.

The team also won 500 for their chosen local charity, Pilton Community Health Project.

Snow way the weather will stop exhibition

The Leith Gallery's Christmas exhibition is in full swing after artists battled through the snow to bring a selection of Scottish art to Leith.

Young artists including Jack Frame, Lindsay Turk and Jemma Derbyshire, plus established artists such as Alan King, Douglas Phillips and James Somerville, are showing a huge variety of styles and subject matter.

Also exhibiting are new ceramicists to the gallery such as Bev Milward, while Michael McManus returns with more of his conker works.

Gallery hosts Christmas tour

A SPECIAL Christmas tour of the National Gallery of Scotland is being held on Saturday.

The guided tour of the gallery's permanent collection will be focusing on works by Domenichino, Avercamp and Raeburn among others.

Homes plan at hotel site

A DEVELOPER has put forward plans to build seven new homes on land near a Lothian hotel.

The plans call for the houses to be created on land to the north of Brixwold Castle Hotel in Cockpen Road, Bonnyrigg.

The proposals are set to be considered by Midlothian Council at a future meeting.

Veterans not left in the cold

A DEDICATED volunteer gave the Capital's veterans an extra helping hand during the big freeze after trudging through the snow to help serve meals.

Andrew Scotland, from Moredun, worked at the Erskine Edinburgh Home in Gilmerton every day for the past fortnight to assist the care home staff.
