Community News: Author helps set up new city resources

The author of the iconic children's book The Gruffalo was on hand to help Amnesty International launch two new education resources at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh.

The two resources are a free primary school pack, which serves as a taster for human rights, and a new and revised edition of Our World Our Rights.

Children from the Royal Mile and South Morningside primary schools met with author Julia Donaldson yesterday.

New market to bear fruit

A NEW monthly market selling local and organic fruit, vegetables, meat and baking is to be launched in Portobello this Saturday.

The market will be held in Brighton Park and is designed to complement the shops on Portobello High Street. It will run between 10am and 2pm.

Panel bid to be launched

A NATIONAL campaign to recruit new members to the children's panel was due to be officially launched in the Capital today.

The Minister for Children and Early Years, Adam Ingram, was due to launch the new campaign, along with panel member Stuart Smith.

Scholarship fillip for two ballerinas

TWO ballerinas have won scholarships to a prestigious Scottish dance school.

Edinburgh 12-year-olds Erica Walker and Eva Ross-Davies sailed through auditions to win places at Knightswood Secondary School in Glasgow.

The talented duo were among the 22 successful dancers out of 160 hopefuls to earn a berth at the school. Alumni at the school have appeared in West End plays, TV series and films.

Diabetes sufferers take on mountain challenge

THREE type 1 diabetes sufferers are undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge with a difference this month.

Steven Craig, 30, from Edinburgh, Claire Moon, 37, and Ann Bentley, 31, will scale the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales three-legged beginning on September 10 to raise money for Diabetes UK's children's support holidays.

Bank staff invest time for kids

ROYAL Bank of Scotland volunteers recently helped to install new facilities for children at a Barnardo's centre in Edinburgh. The volunteers turned an underused area of garden at Caern House, at Gogarbank, into a quiet space for children.
