Comedy review: Beth Becomes Her

BETH BECOMES HER***UNDERBELLY'S BABY BELLY (VENUE 88)

THIS is, depending on your point of view, a rousing affirmation of the human spirit or a slightly icky horror story. While none but the most stone-hearted or prejudiced will fail to be moved near to tears by post-op lesbian transsexual Bethany Black's story, her insistence on going into quite graphic detail about catheters, dismemberment – quite literally – and the process of dilation will leave the squeamish with a lump in their throat. Still, imagine how she must have felt.

This shock value is an integral part of Black's routine, but the obvious comfort this tall, emo-styled stand-up has in her new self is heartening. That her story starts with abortion, infidelity and suicide attempts and ends on a note of encouragement leaves a warm glow of optimism. But of course, Black's not here to make us feel good.

Black's comedy stems from her dry honesty about every permutation of socially awkward situation she's been involved in, guest-starring ex-BNP-supporting uncles, stuffy dinner party guests and unsuccessfully chatted-up married women. And the only time she becomes a figure of pity is when she nervously tells us her parents are coming to see the show next week.
