COMEDY: KRISTEN SCHAAL AND KURT BRAUNOHLER – DOUBLE DOWN HEARTS

KRISTEN SCHAAL AND KURT BRAUNOHLER – DOUBLE DOWN HEARTS****ASSEMBLY @ GEORGE STREET (VENUE 3)

MANY years ago. Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler were TV stars. They shared the role of Judge Baby, dispensing justice with a dribble. Today they're ready to conquer the world with their three-act drama, Double Down Hearts. In the tradition of Chekhov, it's a tale of gambling addiction and dread deformity, and it's a bleedin' hoot.

Schaal and Braunohler are the classic odd couple, he like a young William Hurt, dapper in three-piece suit; she innocent-looking in boho chic. But they're the soul of sympatico, swapping quickfire banter that swiftly establishes their stage personas. They're a supremely confident stage pair, combining child-like enthusiasm with delicious danger. The play is spread through the show, and in between chunks of it there's Penelope, Princess of Pets, the home-made epic Schaal and Braunohler have somehow failed to sell to US TV.

It's a tale of a woman in a world of sexy, murderous talking animals to rival, er, Sooty. There's also a chance to win a date with Kristen and the daftest incongruous dance routine you'll see this year. The only tiny moan I have is that Schaal and Braunohler seem to assume we've all grown up in the US, with head-scratching references to The Smothers Brothers, Lewis and Clark, and some soft drink or other.

Still, this is one of the funniest 50 minutes you're likely to see this year.
