'Cold case' arrest of man, 45, for kidnap and rape in 1989

POLICE yesterday arrested a man on suspicion of kidnapping and raping a woman more than 20 years ago.

The 45-year-old man was arrested at his home in Ayrshire and was last night being questioned by detectives.

The victim, then 22, was walking home alone from a friend's house in Burnley in Lancashire in the early hours of 18 January, 1989. She was approached by a man

then was bundled into a car and driven away by a second man to a secluded location where both attackers subjected her to a sustained sexual assault.

Detectives from the "cold case" team are also looking for witnesses to an incident hours before the woman was attacked, when two women were approached near Burnley bus station.

Detective Sergeant John Entwisle said: "I would like to ask people who would have lived in the area at the time, or frequented it, to cast their minds back to Tuesday, 17 January, 1989.

"Are you one of those women who was approached on Burnley bus station late on the Tuesday evening, or perhaps you might know one of those women?"
