Coastguard costs revealed

Figures have been released disclosing the cost of running coastguard station buildings in the UK.

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Aberdeen was the most expensive, with rent, rates, utilities and maintenance totalling 280,311.

Clyde had the second highest costs at 112,441 and MMRC Brixham came third with costs of 112,172 in the financial year 2009-10. The bill for MMRC Forth was the lowest at 44,662.

The figures, which do not include staff costs, were obtained after a freedom of information request by union representatives of staff at Shetland Coastguard after job cuts - from 18 to eight - were announced.
