Club captain Liam Craig leaves Hibs

Hibs club captain Liam Craig is to leave the club after he was told that his contract will not be renewed, the club confirmed today.

Craig, who joined the Easter Road club in 2013, played the last of his 74 matches for Hibs on Saturday when they failed to overcome Rangers in the Premiership play-off semi-finals, condemning them to another year in the Championship.

The 27-year-old midfielder said: “Naturally I’m disappointed to leave Hibernian, but I would like to wish everybody associated with the club all the best for the future.

“The reaction from the crowd at the end of Saturday’s game was absolutely magnificent and I believe Hibernian will now build on the progress made over the course of the season.

“I always wanted to finish on a high at Hibs, but unfortunately that wasn’t to be, nevertheless it’s a special club with great supporters and I was very proud to captain the team.

“There is a good dressing room and coaching staff at the club and I wish Hibs every success going forward.”

Head Coach Alan Stubbs said Craig had been a “model professional”.

Stubbs said: “I would like to thank Liam for everything he has done for the football club – he is a model professional and has been a great ambassador for Hibernian.

“His contribution over the season was appreciated and we wish him all the best as he embarks on the next chapter in his career.”
