Climber dies after 40ft fall into quarry

A ROCK climber died after plunging 40ft down a quarry, police confirmed last night.

The 34-year-old was climbing with a group in the Angus area when he fell down into a quarry at Legaston Farm, Colliston, near Arbroath, yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called at around 2:45pm where paramedics tried to resuscitate the climber, who is understood to be from the Dundee area. Police will not release the man's name until his next of kin have been informed.

A police spokesman said "Tayside Police are currently in attendance and carrying out detailed inquiries in an effort to establish the full set of circumstances surrounding the incident.

"The Health and Safety Executive has also been informed.

"As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator-fiscal."
