City wins Euro award at tourism ‘Oscars’

EDINBURGH has beaten off competition from London, Paris and Barcelona to win the title of Europe’s Leading Destination in 2012.

The prestigious prize was presented at the World Travel Awards in Portugal, described by organisers as the “Oscars of the travel industry”. The awards ceremony highlights and rewards travel brands that have made the greatest contribution annually to the industry.

City leader Andrew Burns welcomed the award.

He added: “This is a
terrific endorsement from the people who work in the travel
industry.

Edinburgh is already a multi-award winning city and this is further confirmation that Edinburgh is a world-
class tourist destination steeped in history with a great atmosphere.”
