City unveils plan to be a Gael force in Scotland

PLANS for council signs in Gaelic, community events held in Gaelic and bringing the Mod to Edinburgh were today unveiled as part of the city council’s Gaelic Language Plan.

The plan, which is required by law, highlights the work about to get under way on a new Gaelic-medium primary school at Bonnington.

And it outlines a long list of commitments designed to help safeguard and promote the language. The plan promises consultation with partner councils on “Welcome to Edinburgh” signs in Gaelic and proposes a move towards bilingual signage at main council buildings.

Council leader Andrew Burns said: “The plan outlines some specific actions that will go towards strengthening the use of Gaelic across the city, such as improving support to those who speak Gaelic in the home.

“We will establish a group to deliver these over the coming months and years.”
